Belize Weddings

Weddings are private affairs and absolutely beautiful. Here's a picture of our beach front being "prepped" for a small wedding.

Here are the newly weds walking to the end of the pier for some professional photos.

A great place to begin life together.

Egrets at Caye Casa

One of our guests took these pictures of egrets right out front by the pier.
               Wonderful pictures. Equally wonderful guests.

September Celebrations in Belize

There were parades of school children in uniforms, parades of dancing adults in variations of some scanty uniforms, beauty pageants, drumming contests, bands playing into the night and fireworks!
Of course, I took pictures – none of which were in focus!! So, here is one of Reef watching the parade from her favorite place.

Caye Casa Sleeping Dogs

Every once in awhile, one of my guests will ask why I moved to Belize.

Usually I explain that I just don't like wearing shoes; but, one of the real reasons is that I got tired of wearing layers of clothes.  In Vermont, no matter what the season, I always wore at least three layers – not to mention shoes.

Here, I usually can get away with one layer and no shoes.

However, on a day like today, even one layer feels like too much.
                                     It's 90 in the shade.

Tropical Storm Isaac and Belize

Tropical Storm Isaac is so huge it has stolen all our wind.  Even in tiny Belize, we are affected. Here's a picture of the Belize Barrier Reef off our pier in San Pedro. Usually we always see waves breaking on the coral.  Not so today.  Let's hope it doesn't become a hurricane.

Creole

English is the official language of Belize; but, in truth, for 95% of all Belizeans, English is their second language.  Many speak Spanish or Garifuna or one of 5 Maya languages or German or Chinese or, my favorite  - Creole.

Here, in no special order, are three of my favorite sayings in Creole.  First, imagine the sun beating down, the salty smell of the sea, the lazy island time we all appreciate and a group of good friends gathered under the shade of a few palm trees.
"Da how?"
"Don't study her."
"From ever since."

Said in greeting, given as advice, and placed in history, these, to me, need no translation.

Late Summer Special

Great News!

We are offering free tickets to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve for each person who stays with us during August, September and October, 2012.

Located off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Belize's oldest marine reserve.   Hol Chan which is Mayan for 'little channel" was established in 1987.

In 1999, Shark Ray Alley, an adjacent section of the Belize Barrier Reef, was added to further protect this unparalleled diving/snorkeling experience for visitors and an important refuge for marine life.

No visit to Ambergris Caye is complete without a trip to Hol Chan – either as a diver, a snorkeler, or in a glass bottom boat.

San Pedro Lobster Fest

Saturday night we ate:  lobster burgers, lobster sushi, lobster sliders and lobster "wings" as we watched others eat whole lobster tails, lobster ceviche, and lobster everything else you can imagine – all accompanied by appropriate rum drinks. And then the music started.  The Garifuna Collective is still my favorite.  The rain held off until late when the clouds produced a spectacular thunder and lightning show in honor of this great San Pedro festival.
